Dit boek laat zien hoe deze techniek zich in de loop van de eeuw ontwikkelde van de 'gekleurde tekeningen' van romantische schilders als Koekkoek en Nuyen, tot de waterverfschilderijen van de Haagse School en de Tachtigers. Bekende kunstenaars als Mauve, Weissenbruch, Jozef en Isaac Israëls en Breitner brachten het medium tot volle wasdom. De landschappen, interieurs en stadsgezichten die zij met water en pigment op papier tot leven riepen, behoren tot de hoogtepunten van hun oeuvres. De aquarel verwierf een steeds voornamere plaats in het negentiende-eeuwse kunstleven. Hierbij bestond een enorme rijkdom in onderwerpen, stijl en techniek. Naast bijvoorbeeld de los geschilderde impressionistische weidelandschappen uit de Haagse School, blonken kunstenaars als Springer en Bles uit in juist ongelooflijk precies geschilderde aquarellen van stadsgezichten of historische voorstellingen. Een belangrijke rol werd bij deze ontwikkeling gespeeld door de Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, een kunstenaarsvereniging die zich speciaal richtte op de promotie van de aquarel als zelfstandig medium. Hierbij werd, als oprichter en jarenlang voorzitter, een hoofdrol vervuld door Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Hij maakte niet alleen zelf aquarellen, maar verzamelde ook werken van anderen. Zijn verzameling, bewaard in De Mesdag Collectie, en de rijke aquarellenverzameling die Teylers Museum bijeenbracht in de negentiende eeuw, aangevuld met enkele van de mooiste aquarellen uit andere collecties, staan centraal in dit boek.
